Whether you are currently in a college search or have already gone through the process to find a college, you know that the whole process can be one huge headache. I remember how hard it was for me, and always thought that there had to be some easier way. A recruiter from a school of higher education travels around the country checking out high school state tournaments. Because my high school didn't make the state tournament often I had to rely on my coach and who she knew so that my name would be had among coaches at a higher level...

Kilkenny, Ireland, is the smallest city in Ireland in terms of both the number of people living there and the land area that it covers. However, small as it is, it's the county seat of County Kilkenny, Ireland, and a city famous for its history and nightlife. Kilkenny was the capital of Ireland until late into the 12th century. In 1366 the Statutes of Kilkenny were penned and the city, where the Irish Parliament was located, lent them its name. These statutes consisted of 19 parts that were essentially meant to keep the Irish people from having a "bad influence" on the Normans. They kept the Irish and the Normans from marrying one another and sharing the Irish customs and languages. Kilkenny...
State Lawmakers Disappoint Las Vegas Schools
The most recent Nevada session did little to alleviate the feeling in Las Vegas Schools that public education is low on the state's list of priorities. As Las Vegas Schools try to educate a large and diverse urban community the state of Nevada doesn't offer much support. Spending per pupil in the state is about $1,800 less than the national average. Las Vegas Schools, along with other education and healthcare advocates, expressed disappointment at the legislature's inability to bring the state to what some call a minimal standard of care. One of the biggest disappointments to parents and educators of Las Vegas Schools was the lack of money to fund a universal all-day kindergarten program. According...

The Truth About Connecticut College Financial...
Many Connecticut parents feel like they are hit by a city bus when they find out that the many months of work they have done to push their child to do community service, study hard for the SAT and fill out financial aid forms only allows their student to qualify for student loan debt. It is not a good feeling to have to sit your child down and explain that all of their efforts allowed them the exclusive once in a lifetime opportunity to go into debt. The worst part about it is that many Connecticut colleges promote student loan debt like it's the best thing since sliced bread when the real truth is the same Connecticut colleges are sitting on billion dollar endowments that can be used to really help...
Enjoy Colorado Wines
Announcing! One of the Best Kept Secrets in the World of Wine... Do you remember hearing that the best wines are now coming from California? Forget everything you've heard about California wine and listen, on my summer vacation I discovered one of the best wine growing areas in the United States. And it's not on the West Coast. As it happens, my daughter asked me to take a trip with her to look at a piece of property on the Western Slope of Colorado that she and her husband were interested in. She needed my expertise with evaluating the condition of the business that accompanied the house and land. "Just what is this business?" I asked her. She replied that it was a vineyard. I had...

College searches allow potential students to make comparisons of their top higher learning choices. In fact, most college searches these days rely heavily on the Internet. When a prospective student or...
It takes more than making the grades and scoring high on the SATs for students to be college-bound. Each year, students are faced with the burden of figuring out how they are going to pay for their college education. Knowing how and where to search for aid can make the difference in rather or not many students will be able to attend college. Outside from personal or family savings, there are government grants, federal or personal loans, and scholarships. Government grants are almost always limited and only cover a fraction of the total cost of attending college. Federal and personal loans are debt, which has to be repaid after graduating. Loans are great resources for covering expenses left...

Why Are College Football Authorities Against...
As an avid college football fan, I have been wanting to address this issue for a while now. My question is this - why is there no post-season playoff in college football? There has been much speculation over the past few years that points to the eventual implementation of a playoff, but so far nothing has come to fruition. With so many reasons for a playoff, I simply can't fathom why college football authorities are so against playoffs. What reasons you ask? Well, here are just a few: 1. Every other sport in America does it. Why do you think that is? Because it makes sense! What playoffs provide that the current bowl-game program does not is a clear-cut winner. There is never any debate as to who...
Starting College after Homeschooling
Families have homeschooled their children throughout history. Homeschooling fell out of fashion when modern public schools were developed, until homeschooling began again in the early 1980s. Since that time some of those homeschool graduates have continued their education, but it hasn't always been easy to go on to college. Until recently, being accepted into college after homeschooling has been uncommon, but times are changing. In fact, many colleges now seek out homeschool graduates for admission. The reasons they do so are varied, but it boils down to the fact that homeschooled students already know how to learn. Should your child pursue a college education after being homeschooled? That is...

Choosing The Right Baseball Glove
With the sun beating down on your neck and the bases are loaded, the pressure is on you, the first baseman, to play the game right. Did we mention that you play for the majors? The roar and rumble of the crowd, the dust rising up and glistening in the sunlight, the glares of the opposing team all around, it can be a tough place to focus on the task at hand. And then it happens. Bat hits ball, the fans roar, and second base suddenly throws you fire. Before you can even think about it, you react with the 'instinct' which has been trained and integrated into your mind and into your arms for years. And when you look down you have done it. The ball's in your hand. The batter's out. You've won the game...
College Or Pros, What Pays For Young Baseball...
If your son is a professional baseball prospect, you might want to know what makes more sense for him: continue playing at the collegiate level, or turn pro right away. The price where it pays to go pro might surprise you. Of the four major U.S. sports, only baseball and basketball draft high school and college players together. However, the basketball draft lasts only two rounds and includes players from overseas professional leagues, while baseball provides far more opportunities. The Amateur Baseball Draft lasts ten rounds and includes only high school and college players. While baseball offers immediate professional opportunities to high school graduates, a minor leaguer ballplayer usually needs...

Run It Up College Coaches
Stats, trends and betting angles all factor into handicapping analysis. Another factor to consider is coaching. There are coaches in both pro and college football that cover the spread on a consistent basis. For the most part, coaches don't consider the point spread each game, and certainly rarely talk about it. Former Washington coach Rick Neuheisel was fired because he was playing a college basketball tournament pool at school, so you will never find a coach saying, "We hope to cover the number this weekend." However, it's important to understand why certain coaches cover often, and why some continually fall short ATS. A large part of it is preparation, organization and in-game adjustments...

Since there are readers not only from USA but also from other countries, I don't take for granted that everybody knows what baseball actually is. According to The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia baseball is "bat-and-ball sport known as the national pastime of the United States. It derives its name from the four bases that form a diamond (the infield) around the pitcher's mound. Teams consist of nine players who use a leather-covered hard ball, a wooden (in the professional game) or aluminum bat, and padded gloves. Additionally, the batter, catcher, and home-plate umpire wear special protective gear. Teams alternate turns in the field and at bat, the home team batting last. One turn at bat for each...
How to be Successful - Failure Vs Success
Ok this one is supposed to be simple. Everyone wants success to some degree. Now success isn't the same for everybody; for some it's money, for others it's attaining an attractive spouse, and for some it's just plain happiness in one form or the other (sorry if I left your category out). In any case, it's tried and true that some people just seem to have their chips in all the right baskets and know all the right people while some people just plain don't. I want to do a simple comparison between a successful thinker and a failure-type thinker. Both deal with the same obstacles and both, believe it or not, go through the same internal struggles on a daily basis. The successful thinker has the same...

Talk to your guidance counselor about college. These days, it is never too early to start thinking about...
